Dr. Phaedra L. Brown

Hope Institute of Science was founded by Dr. Phaedra L. Brown, whose passion for education, faith, and equity inspired the creation of this school. Dr. Brown founded H.I.S. with a deep desire to provide high-quality STEAM education to young African American students and to play an active role in closing the achievement gap in STEM-related fields.

To prepare for this calling, Dr. Brown returned to school to earn a Master’s Degree in Education with Biology Certification, followed by a Doctorate in Educational Leadership. These academic and professional steps were taken intentionally to ensure strong leadership, meaningful mentorship, and academic rigor for every child enrolled at H.I.S. STEAM Preschool.

Who We Are

H.I.S. School is a small, private STEAM-focused preschool dedicated to meeting the individual needs of every student. We offer a loving and nurturing environment where the safety, education, and well-being of our children always come first. Our small class sizes allow teachers to focus on each child’s unique strengths and learning styles, providing personalized instruction and meaningful support.

Our educational philosophy is grounded in the belief that children learn best through developmentally appropriate, engaging, and challenging experiences. At H.I.S. School, we provide a stimulating learning environment that supports the spiritual, social, emotional, cognitive, and physical growth of every child. Through purposeful play and hands-on exploration, our students actively participate in their learning—an approach inspired by the principles of progressive education.

Our primary goal is to ignite an early interest and curiosity in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) while fostering a community of confident, independent, and capable learners. We are committed to respecting the dignity, worth, and individuality of each child, helping every student reach their fullest potential in a supportive and joyful atmosphere.

Teaching STEAM early is a strategic advantage, igniting children’s curiosity while building the critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration skills that shape future-ready learners. At H.I.S. School, STEAM isn’t a side program — it’s embedded into the full academic day, from morning affirmations to language and literacy, math, handwriting, music and movement, and daily hands-on STEAM experiences. Students explore safe, age-appropriate experiments, engage in imaginative expression, and participate in field trips that reinforce real-world learning.
